Using a Meditation Shawl
Years ago, I began using a meditation shawl in my own practice, and noticed a difference as soon as I started using it. I no longer meditate as often as I used to, but it’s something I know I can always turn to when life gets a little too busy. The shawl became my signal that it was time to let go of the outside world and turn inward. When you wrap yourself in a meditation shawl, you’re creating a quiet signal to your body and mind that it’s time to slow down. The shawl can act as a physical and energetic boundary, helping to block out distractions and provide comfort during moments of stillness.
As with a familiar meditation spot, over time, it builds energy, and the same is true of a meditation shawl; it becomes infused with the energy of your practice.
If you'd like to incorporate a shawl into your practice, the following options may be helpful. Select a shawl made from a fabric that feels good against your skin, such as soft wool, cotton, silk, or cashmere, which are all lovely choices. The color is up to you; your shawl color can connect to different needs, as I have listed below. Keep your shawl separate from everyday use, and reserve it solely for your meditation practice. It will then become your own mobile sacred space. If it’s of a heavier, warmer material, it’s perfect to drape over your shoulders while enjoying a walking meditation in the cooler months.
I hope you take time to pause, breathe, and reconnect. If you’ve been looking to create your own sacred space, perhaps a meditation shawl is a great way to start, and it will become a part of your journey, too.
